Blackboard Collaborate Session Never Starts

Summary

This document shows you what to do if Blackboard Collaborate will not start.

You must download the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher.  After successfully doing this and the Collaborate session still never starts, the most probable cause is Java.  You must add an exception to your Java:

On a PC

  • Open start menu
  • Click all programs
  • Click Java
  • Click configure java
  • Select the security tab
  • Click edit site list
  • Click add
  • Enter https://blackboard.boisestate.edu
  • Click add
  • Click ok
  • Click ok
  • Restart Boise State Blackboard application

On a Mac

  • Open system preferences
  • Click java
  • Select the security tab
  • Click edit site list
  • Click add
  • Enter https://blackboard.boisestate.edu
  • Click add
  • Click ok
  • Click ok
  • Restart Boise State University Blackboard

Another less likely issue is the .JNLP file used to launch Bb Collaborate is not associated to the correct program.  In order to fix this issue, the Bb Collaborate session .JNLP file needs to be associated to JAVA. Directions on how to accomplish this can be found below.

  • Open start on your computer dashboard to open the program menu
  • Click default programs
  • Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program
  • Scroll to .JNLP and double-click the item
  • Click browse
  • Navigate to: Local Disc (C:)Program Files or Program Files(x86)Javajre7bin
  • Double-click javaws.exe
  • Click ok
  • The current default column for .JNLP will display Java(TM) Web Start Launcher

Windows XP

  • Click default programs
  • Click associate a file type or protocol with a program
  • Scroll to .JNLP and double-click the item
  • Click browse
  • Navigate to: Local Disc (C:)Program Files or Program Files(x86)Javajre7bin

Mac OS X

  • When trying to launch a Class live session or open an archive you will download a file with one of the following extension: .JNLP
  • CTRL + click on the downloaded file
  • Select open with
  • Click on other
  • Change the Enable option to all applications
  • Check the always open with box
  • Using the browse window, navigate to Macintosh HDSystemLibraryCoreServicesJava web start.app
  • Click open
  • The program associated with Java should now launch. If it does not, your session may have timed out. If this occurs, close your browser, re-open it and try to access the program associated with Java
