Grade Center Best Practices – students “my grades” view

Summary

This document provides some tips that you should keep in mind when using the grade center.

We all know the importance of grades to students so please keep these Grade Center tips in mind to insure the students’ my grades view reflects current course activity:

  • Always enter in a 0 (zero) for missed assignments, quizzes, exams, etc.  This insures that the students’ total points column is reflecting current class points and activity
    • All course site Grade Centers will contain a total points column.  By default this column only adds or sums the students attempted (those cells with scores) points
  • Always exclude a column from calculations before hiding it from the student and/or your view
    • Via the grade center column drop down menu > select edit column information via the grade center column drop down menu > select the radio button do not include in calculations at the bottom of the page > click submit
    • Then via the grade center column drop down menu > select show/hide users.  This hides the column from the students’ my grades view
    • Then via the grade center column drop down menu > select hide column.  This hides the column from the instructors, graders and teachers assistant full grade center view
  • Always update the grade center column due date
    • Via the grade center column drop down menu > select edit column information via the grade center column drop down menu > enter in the appropriate due date > click submit
    • Students assessments in their my grades view are automatically sorted by due date
  • Use the Student Preview Mode feature to validate what students’ see when clicking on my grades in the course menu
