How to Access Cable TV in Residence Halls, Suites and Town Homes
Here’s what you need to use cable TV on campus:
- You need an HD TV to access cable on campus
- When you connect your TV to the cable jack, you will have automatic access to the Boise State Enhanced Cable List
There are cable jacks in all residence hall rooms with no common area (Towers, Chaffee). Residence hall suites (Keiser, Taylor, Driscoll, Morrison, University Suites, University Square, Lincoln Townhomes) have cable jacks in the common areas. There is a cable box in each apartment in our apartment complexes. There are cable jacks in both the residence hall rooms and common areas in the Honors College and Sawtooth Hall.

Common Issues with Cable TV in Residence Halls
Fuzzy Signal or No Signal At All
Check the cable connection to the back of the TV, and to the wall. Multiple connectors to extend the cable line to the TV in a desired location can degrade the signal. If possible, the television should be connected directly to the wall cable.
TV Receives Only Some of the Channels
You need to program the TV to receive all available channels. Some older televisions may not be able to receive all available channels. If some or even only one channel comes through, the issue is with the television, not the cable company.
All residence hall cable is provided in a QAM digital format. A QAM tuner allows your TV to tune to digital or HD channels. Most TVs manufactured after 2006 have a QAM tuner built in. To learn if your TV has a QAM tuner:
- Search online by make/model of your TV or check the owner’s manual for model
- If your TV remote has the (.) or (-) symbol button for easy tuning or displays channels such as 5.2 or 5-2, your TV likely has a QAM tuner.
- Televisions that, depending on model, may be missing the QAM tuner:
If your television does not have a QAM tuner, you can update your television or purchase a digital conversion box. Make sure the conversion box has a QAM tuner. Most tuner boxes available at electronic stores from over-the-air digital TV transition do not include QAM so make sure it lists ATSC/Clear QAM, or NTSC/QAM.
