Security Software

The Office of Information Technology offers services and software designed to protect University computers from a myriad of virus, spyware, and data theft threats.

AntiVirus Software

All University-owned computers are required to have antivirus software installed and current when attaching to the University network, per Boise State policy.

Boise State University has a site license for employees for Symantec AntiVirus for both Microsoft Windows and Mac computers.

This license allows for installations on all University-owned devices, as well as employee personal computers.

Please note you will need to uninstall any antivirus software you have on a personal computer before installing Symantec AntiVirus.

University Employees

University employees can obtain Symantec AntiVirus software via a free download by contacting the Help Desk at 208-426-4357, or email

Students using Windows 10 already have Windows Defender installed, which is a fine antivirus solution. For other devices, software such as BitDefender and Kaspersky are recommended as antivirus software alternatives.

A free product available is Avira Free Antivirus, although you should be sure to uncheck the Ask Toolbar during installation, and uninstall its browser extension.

BitLocker Drive Encryption

BitLocker Drive Encryption is a service offered in Microsoft Windows operating systems. It allows users to encrypt data on their hard drives. If you use BitLocker, your data will be secure, even if your computer is misplaced.

Visit our BitLocker page for more details and frequently asked questions about BitLocker.
